Aboriginal clap sticks are a traditional percussive instrument used in ceremony, social dancing, song, and storytelling. They help keep rhythm for songlines and have long played a role in passing knowledge from one generation to the next. Like many Aboriginal tools, clap sticks are multi-purpose and were also used in everyday life, including for digging and gathering food.
Each set in this collection is hand-painted by Russell Yilamara Brown, a proud Garawa and Mara man, using techniques passed down through his family. The designs feature traditional Arnhem Land styles, including x-ray and rarrking (cross-hatching), painted in natural ochre colours. Every pair is unique, making this set not just a musical resource, but a collection of original cultural artworks.

Russell Yilamara Brown is a proud Garawa and Mara man from South-East Arnhem Land, NT. He currently lives and works on Bundjalung Country, NSW.
Russell is a skilled painter, sculptor, and digital artist whose work blends traditional knowledge with contemporary practice. He is the Principal Artist and Founding Director of Songlines Art, Culture, Education.
